Exploring Educational Spaces in Second Life
This week we will take the participants to different educational spaces in Second Life so that they can form an understanding of the SL environment. We will arrange meetings with experienced language educators teaching in these places. As we will be focusing on exploring ‘learner friendly environments’ this week, we will take participants to those places where English is taught.
Participants will continue to network for informal get-togethers and we will invite experienced Second Lifers to join us and facilitate a learning conversation.
Moderators:
Dennis Newson [Osnacantab Nesterov]
Kalyan Chattopadhyay [Kalyan Horatio]
Nahir Aparicio [Nahiram Vaniva]
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week, you should
- have reflected on your visits in the Grouply.
- have participated in the Grouply
- be aware of how Second Life can be used by language learners for language practice
- have started to become comfortable with the Second Life interface and with its communication tools.

Activities
- There will also be some organized tours during the week. Precise venues, dates and times will be given in good time. You will take snapshots and share them in the Grouply. Write your reflections in the Grouply Blog.
- Attend as many of the guided tours as you can. Post your reflections in the Grouply.
- Attend the guided tour of Virtlantis, which is an island managed by Kip Boam, an E-learning expert, who provides some space and facilities for other language teachers for free. Try to find and talk to some teachers and students while there and report back in the Discussion forum for this week.
- Attend a guided tour of AVALON Learning, the home of the AVALON EU project by the European Commission to create and test language learning tasks and activities in Virtual worlds as well as creating and piloting a training course for teachers who would like to extend their e-learning skills to include virtual teaching worlds.
- Go on a tour of the EduNation islands. Talk to some educators you meet there. How do you like the place? What can educators do there? Report back in the Discussion forum.
- Attend a guided tour of Cypris Village and find out how English is taught there, and take this opportunity to interact with tutors and learners there.
- Also attend the tour of the British Council Isle to find out about their work in Second Life
- Don't forget to take pictures during these sessions. Upload the pictures to our Grouply and tag them with "Village".
- Post your reflections to your blog on the Village Grouply.
- It is also planned that you will be given the chance to meet and talk to some colleagues who have wide experience in Second Life.
